Michele Marcoux – Biography

MICHELE MARCOUX is an artist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She received a BA Fine Art (cum laude) from Bennington College, Vermont, and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She completed a Masters of Letters Fine Art Practice (distinction) at Glasgow School of Art in 2016. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio she lived in Vermont, Philadelphia, California and New York City before moving to Scotland in 1990. In the 1980’s Michele lived in New York City, in Tribeca, Harlem, the Lower East Side, and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Paintings from real and imagined places. they were often begun outdoors in the landscape – an abandoned village in Spain, the mountains of Italy, disused cottages in Dumfriesshire . The work considered memory, displacement, romantic notions of ruin. Inspiration: painting in the Spanish countryside

In June/July 2023 I went on a solo, self-directed residency to paint in the landscape of Aragon a region in northeast Spain bordering the Pyrenees. My son lives in Banaguas, a tiny ancient village (the church dates from 1100) outside of Jaca, the medieval capital of Aragon. He travels in the summer so I decided to sublet his studio flat and take my painting on the road. As a contemporary painter I often go to the landscape to find solitude and to engage with nature. Quiet time alone allows me to experiment and opens up new avenues with materials. It…
