2023, RSA Annual Exhibition

Nostalgia drive-by (Perthshire), oil on linen, 2022

I’m delighted that my painting Nostalgia drive-by (Perthshire) has been selected for the 197th Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition 2023!

This picture is something of a palimpsest and a memory object for me as the linen canvas I used was originally stretched and primed with true gesso back in the 90’s when I was the mother of two small boys with no studio. It took me ages to make stretch and gesso the canvas in my kitchen when the kids were at school. The painting I then made, a landscape, to me was a failure. I had so little time back then I couldn’t take enough risks, and with no studio, it was hard to know how to improve it. In the end, I put the linen canvas away in a cupboard and forgot about it..

Last year, I found the canvas again, which is extremely well made and still tight as a drum! I decided to make another painting, a landscape which became Nostalgia drive-by (Perthshire) a painting it took almost 30 years to make.

The RSA Annual Exhibition is on at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh from May 6th – June 11th.
