WASPS Artists and Makers Market,Glasgow – X-Burg: wearable art

X-burg is a new line of vintage collage jewellery  created from original designs that I developed while  living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the 1980’s. Varnished collages on aluminium and wood, the jewellery designs reflect the fractured, dynamic, sometimes dangerous culture of 1980’s NYC. Source materials include Mexican comic books, paper money, vintage stationary, postage stamps and newspapers.

The jewellery designs in X-burg are directly inspired by my visual art practice. The archive of resources which I collected in NYC made the journey with me out of Williamsburg to my new Scottish home where I have continued to add to it using these found images and textures in my artistic practice as well as in my jewellery making.

All the work in X-Burg is entirely handmade. Tiny bits of paper are cut and glued and carefully hand-finished with resin. Wiring and beadwork is all hand done.

VINTAGE 1980’S DESIGNS: Many of the designs for sale are vintage pieces designed and created in my NY studio in the 1980’s and 90’s. X-burg also includes new work created in my Edinburgh studio in 2018.

X-burg is wearable art that is out of time and out of place.

I am an American-born artist living and working in Scotland since the 1990s. My visual art practice explores the ambiguous and fragmentary nature of memory, and identity using constructed and found objects and images to create painting, sculpture and moving image.
